We Found a Home!

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

We only have 1-week after we arrived here in San Diego to find a place to live and move in because our flight leaves on the first to Tampa for the cruise. We rented a car and my company put us up at an old YMCA hostel right downtown San Diego. Our Penske and Uhaul train are parked at airport parking at $20 per day, so the pressure is on to find a place fast. We looked all day Sunday and were very frustrated by the end of the day. Not only hadn’t we found anything, what we did find was very expensive, very small and old, and not available anyway. The same went for Monday until in the evening when we went a little further from the city we found a nice apartment complex that allowed a dog and cat, and was having a move-in special. This made the price in our range. I asked how long it takes to get downtown, and they said about 20 minutes and that rush hour traffic is not so bad. Everything looked good, so we took it. Our fish will be happy to be back in their home too :)

Our Move to California

Monday, June 25th, 2007

Well, I finaly graduated and got a job at a dot net startup out in sunny California. They flew me out a couple weeks ago for an interview, made a good offer, and so we’re moving to California! Some of our friends came and helped us pack and load the moving truck. However, not everything fit in our newly rented 16 foot Penske truck that was supposedly a two bedroom truck. So, I had to run out quickly and rent a Uhaul trailer. The next morning on the day we were supposed to leave we were loading the Uhaul trailer and we couldn’t even fit everything in it! So, some stuff we gave away to those who were helping us pack, some went to the trash, and some stayed behind in our storage locker. We looked kind of funny, a Penske truck pulling a Uhaul trailer. Although, during the trip we did pass another mover with the same configuration.

So finally, at 8pm, we were off. We only made it to Fort Wayne that night, but actually leaving was a great boost for moral. Butch, Ladonna’s husband, told us to take the southern route through Indianapolis and Pheonix to avoid the traffic and mountains. We made good time getting to San Diego. Joy says the funnest part of moving was driving. It was fun to see the changing environment as we went from green Michigan to hills, plains, kind of a nothingness, and finally to the desert.

It was in the desert that we had our first problem on the trip. We were driving our small train and a car came in front of us and tried to force us off the road. We were in the middle of nowhere, so I was a little nervous about pulling over with all of our possessions. So, we avoided them, but a little further down the road we saw things falling out from behind the truck. I quickly pulled over and upon inspection realized that one of the trailers tires we completly gone. I called Uhaul and after walking what seemed like miles and miles through the hot desert I found an exit sign identifying where we were so they could send someone to fix the tire.

We finally made it to San Diego on Saturday afternoon. Now we just need to find a place to live before we have to return the Penske truck, Uhaul trailer, and our flight to Florida for my grandfather’s 100th birthday.
